Lonely Kids Club is an independent Australian clothing brand. I started it in Sydney in 2011, printing t-shirts one at a time, and it's stayed independent and made-here the whole time. No parent company, no investors, and nothing made in a factory overseas. Everything is still printed to order in our own Sydney studio.

How it started
The honest version: I was failing a construction degree and way too into t-shirts. I went to Europe, came back with a clearer idea of what I wanted to make, and started printing my own in 2011. That was pretty much the whole business plan.
It's been independent ever since. Nobody bought in, nobody took it over, and I'm still one of the people printing the shirts. The idea it started on, that clothing should feel personal, is still the thing running it.
For a good while it was just me, printing in small runs and packing orders at home. It grew, but slowly, and the shape of it never really changed. There's a small team now, but your order is still printed by one of us, not run off a line in a warehouse somewhere.

Where we fit
Search "independent Australian clothing brands" and you'll get a long list, and honestly, a lot of it is good. There are the polished fashion labels, the ethical and sustainable specialists, and the tiny one-person operations making incredible stuff out of a spare room. It's a healthy scene, and no single brand is right for everyone.
We're the graphic streetwear corner of it. Loud tees, a sense of humour, usually something to say, printed here and made to order. If you're after minimal and refined, there are better brands for you. If you want clothing with an opinion, from a label that actually makes it in Australia, that's more our thing.
Actually made in Sydney
Plenty of brands that call themselves Australian are designed here and made overseas. We're not one of them. Everything is designed, printed, packed and posted from our studio in Sydney, and no sweatshop touches any of it.
Printing one shirt at a time keeps the waste low and lets us run a huge back catalogue without a warehouse full of stock we're hoping to shift. The blanks are AS Colour, independently certified on labour and materials, and we print with water-based, OEKO-TEX certified inks. Because nothing gets made until it's ordered, there's no dead stock to discount or throw out at the end of a season.
We run on carbon-neutral power, and every order goes out in a home-compostable mailer with a couple of free extras, an art print and some stickers, because a parcel from us should feel like it came from a person. There's more on our printed in Sydney and how our shirts are made pages.
The artists behind the range
A lot of what we make comes from working with independent artists, some local, some on the other side of the world. Oleg, one of our longest-running collaborators, draws from his studio in Ukraine and has kept it running right through the war. Being independent is what makes those partnerships work. We can put someone's designs out at a scale that suits them, without a bigger company needing it to hit a sales target first.
There are well over a hundred designs across the range because of that, from Oleg, Claire Harrison, Aidanmh and a rotating cast of others. Some sell constantly, some are for a very particular kind of person, and printing to order means both get to exist.
The Sloth Family
Somewhere early on we picked up a family of sloths, headed by Cecil. They turn up across the range and all over the studio walls, and they're a fair summary of the whole thing: we take the clothes seriously and ourselves not very seriously at all.
No focus group ever asked for a sloth named Cecil. That's sort of the point of staying independent.

You get clothing that came from an actual point of view instead of a trend forecast, made by people you could email who'd probably write back. And you're backing a small Australian outfit doing its own thing, not a line on some big group's balance sheet.

How is it different from fast fashion?
Fast fashion runs on making a lot, cheaply and quickly, then moving on. We're the other end of it: made to order in Sydney, no bulk stock, and designs that stick around for years. The idea is you buy one thing you actually like and keep it, rather than five you don't.
What kind of clothing does Lonely Kids Club make?
Mostly graphic tees and oversized tees, plus hoodies, jumpers and a rotating cast of accessories. The designs run from Australiana and pop culture to mental health messaging and one-off artist collaborations. Sizes go from XS to 5XL, and it's all gender neutral.
