There are two kinds of funny Australian t-shirts.
The first kind you find at airport gift shops and tourist markets. They say things like "G'Day Mate" next to a cartoon kangaroo. They are printed on fabric that feels like a used paper towel. Nobody who actually lives here wears them.
The second kind is made by people who grew up here, reference things Australians actually find funny, and happen to be printed on something you would want to wear more than once. That is what good funny Australian graphic tees look like. And that is the kind this post is about.
We run Lonely Kids Club, an independent clothing brand based in Sydney. We have been making Australian humour t-shirts since 2011 and a decent chunk of what we do sits somewhere between funny, weird and very local. So this is partly a guide and partly us showing our work.
What Actually Makes a Good Funny Australian T-Shirt
The best ones tend to share a few things. The humour feels specific rather than broad. The design looks intentional rather than slapped together. And the reference lands for anyone who has spent real time in this country, rather than anyone who has watched a single episode of Crocodile Dundee.
The worst ones try too hard. Oversized fonts, obvious punchlines, clip art animals. You know the ones.
The Categories Worth Knowing
Australiana Humour
This is the sweet spot for a lot of people. Designs built around native wildlife, local landmarks and distinctly Australian experiences. Bin chickens. Magpie swooping season. The particular chaos of a Bunnings car park on a Saturday morning.
Done well, this stuff hits because it is instantly recognisable without being a postcard. Our Australiana collection is built around exactly this kind of reference — things that feel like they could only come from here.
Meme and Internet Humour, But Make It Local
There is a whole genre of funny Australian graphic tees that takes internet humour and filters it through a local lens. The formats feel familiar, the references are distinctly Australian. It works because the audience already speaks the language.
Our memes collection has been running for years and is genuinely one of the things we are most known for. A lot of designs in there started as jokes that felt too specific to work, and then turned out to be exactly what people wanted.
Pop Culture With an Australian Twist
Designs that reference Australian TV, music, sport and cultural moments. The kind of thing where someone across a room clocks it and either immediately gets it or asks where you got it. Both outcomes are fine.
Browse the pop culture collection if that sounds like your thing.
Just Genuinely Weird Stuff
Some of the best funny Australian t-shirts do not fit a category. They are just odd in the right way. A specific animal in an unlikely situation. A phrase that should not be as funny as it is. Something that makes sense to exactly the kind of person who would buy it.
This is probably where we have the most fun as a brand. Browse the full memes range and you will see what we mean.
A Few of Our Favourites Right Now
We are not going to pretend this is an unbiased roundup. We make these. But here are some that have genuinely resonated with people.
Get In The Van Tee
A tee featuring a puppet character offering nutritional advice from a van. The premise is exactly as unsettling as it sounds, which is what makes it work. Art by Claire Harrison. Gets stopped in the street more than almost anything else we make.
Magpie Attack Tee
Swooping season is a universal Australian experience and this one captures it correctly. If you have ever had to reroute your entire morning walk because of a particularly aggressive magpie, this is the tee for you.
Swoopy Boy Tee
Another magpie one because swooping season deserves multiple tees. This one is a little more deadpan and somehow funnier for it.
Succulent Chinese Meal Tee
If you know, you know. If you do not know, look it up and then come back. One of the most recognisable moments in Australian internet culture, now on a tee.

What to Look For When Buying
Printed locally if possible. Everything we make is printed to order in Sydney using DTG printing. That matters for quality, turnaround and not contributing to a mountain of unsold overseas stock. You can read more about how our tees are actually made if you want the full picture.
Check the base garment. A funny design on a bad t-shirt is still a bad t-shirt. We use AS Colour blanks across most of our range because the quality is consistent and the fit is actually good.
Make sure the humour holds up. Some funny Australian graphic tees are funny once and then just become a shirt you avoid wearing. The better ones have a specific enough reference that they stay interesting.
Sizing that works for everyone. We offer sizes from XS to 5XL and our tees are gender neutral. No gendered sizing, no weird fits. Just clothing that works for people.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy funny Australian t-shirts online?
A few places make genuinely good ones. We obviously back our own at Lonely Kids Club, where everything is printed in Sydney and designed around real Australian humour rather than tourist shop aesthetics. Browse the Australiana and memes collections as a starting point.
What makes a funny Australian t-shirt actually good?
Specific references over generic ones, quality fabric, and a design that looks intentional. The tourist shop formula of slapping "No Worries" on a singlet is not really the vibe. The best ones reference things people who actually live here find funny — native wildlife, local culture, Australian internet moments.
Are funny Australian t-shirts good gifts?
Very. Especially for people who have lived here a while and will actually get the references. Our Australiana and memes collections both work well as gifts.
Do you ship funny Australian t-shirts internationally?
Yes. Everything ships from Sydney and we send to most countries. Free shipping within Australia on orders over $85.
Are your t-shirts ethically made?
Yes. We print to order in Sydney using DTG printing and use AS Colour garments across most of our range. You can read more about our approach on our ethical clothing page.
