Oversized t-shirts have become the default fit for graphic tees in Australia. Not because everyone decided to size up overnight, but because the fit genuinely works better for most people. Looser, more comfortable, and the print has room to breathe. Once you wear a good oversized tee it is hard to go back to a fitted one for everyday wear.
The problem is not every brand executes oversized well. Some are just regular tees made in larger dimensions. Others are genuinely designed for the fit — dropped shoulder, wider body, length that works. The difference is noticeable.
We run Lonely Kids Club from a studio in Sydney and have been making oversized t-shirts in Australia since 2011. This guide covers what makes a good oversized tee, how to size one correctly, and some picks from our current range.
What Makes a Good Oversized T-Shirt
The fit needs to be designed from scratch rather than just scaled up. A good oversized tee has a dropped shoulder seam — the seam sits off the shoulder rather than at the top of the arm. The body is wider through the chest and torso. The length is longer than a standard tee. These are distinct design decisions, not just a bigger size.
Fabric weight matters more in an oversized fit. At 180 to 200 GSM, a cotton tee has enough substance to drape properly and hold its shape without being stiff or heavy. Below 160 GSM and an oversized tee starts to feel flimsy and can become see-through depending on the colour. We use 180 GSM combed cotton across our range, which hits the right balance.
Print quality is more visible on an oversized tee. More fabric surface means the design has more room, which is part of why oversized fits work so well for graphic tees. But it also means any print quality issues are harder to hide. We use DTG printing in our Sydney studio, which prints the design directly into the fabric rather than applying a transfer on top — softer feel, better durability, better detail on complex artwork.
How to Size an Oversized T-Shirt
This is the question we get most often and the answer depends on the look you are after.
If you want a genuinely oversized result — the dropped shoulder sitting visibly off your shoulder, the hem hitting low — size up one from your usual. If you want something relaxed and comfortable without the dramatic oversized silhouette, stay in your normal size. Our oversized tees are designed with the fit built in, so even in your usual size they will sit roomier than a standard tee.
The best way to be sure is to check the measurements rather than going by the label. Our detailed sizing and fit page has exact measurements for each size with example photos of how each fit looks on different body shapes. Worth two minutes before ordering if you are unsure.
One thing worth knowing: our oversized fit is a genuinely different pattern to our regular (Staple) fit, not just a scaled-up version. The shoulder seam is in a different position, the body is proportioned differently. If you have ordered our Staple fit before and are moving to oversized for the first time, check the measurements rather than assuming the same size will apply.
Oversized vs Regular vs Maple: Which Fit to Choose
We offer three main t-shirt fits and the choice matters.
Oversized — dropped shoulder, wide relaxed body, longer length. Best for a streetwear-adjacent everyday look. Works well for graphic tees because the larger print area lets artwork land better. Available XS to 5XL.
Staple (regular) — a standard well-fitted tee. Not slim fit, not boxy. Good for people who want something that sits more closely to the body while still being comfortable. Available XS to 5XL.
Maple (feminine) — a shorter, slightly more tailored fit with a higher hem. Sits differently on the body and is popular for people who find standard and oversized fits run long. Available XS to 3XL.
Most of our designs are available across multiple fits. You can filter by fit on the oversized tees collection page or use the full sizing and fit guide to compare measurements.
Some of Our Oversized Tees Worth Knowing About
Everything here is printed to order in our Sydney studio on 180 GSM combed cotton. Here are four from the current range.
Attempted Murder Tee
A group of crows is technically called a murder. This tee takes that fact and runs with it — a design built around one of the better collective noun jokes in the English language. Art by Claire Harrison. Regularly in our top sellers and consistently makes the list of most gifted tees in the range.

I Saw A Dog Tee
"Sorry I'm late, I saw a dog." That is the entire premise and it requires no further explanation for anyone who has been delayed by an unexpected dog encounter. Art by Warwick. The kind of design that is immediately understood by the right person and baffling to everyone else.
Ibuprofen Cat Tee
A collaboration with Popcorn Punk, whose hand-drawn style sits right at the intersection of quirky and relatable. This one is a cat holding a pill with the phrase "I need ibuprofen" — a design that has resonated with a remarkably large number of people, which probably says something about the state of things.
Swoopy Boy Tee
A tribute to swooping magpies — specifically the ones that have turned entire bike paths into obstacle courses every September. The design captures the energy of being pursued by a bird that has decided you are a threat, which is a very specific Australian experience that needs no further context.

How to Look After an Oversized T-Shirt
Two things damage oversized tees faster than anything else: high temperature washing and tumble drying on high heat. Both cause fabric to shrink and pull the fit out of shape. For a DTG printed tee, high heat also breaks down the cured ink over time, causing fading and cracking that starts subtle and gets worse with each wash.
The routine that keeps an oversized tee in good shape is simple. Wash cold or on a gentle warm cycle. Turn inside out before washing to reduce print friction against other garments. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat. Do not iron directly on the print.
Treated that way, a well-made oversized graphic tee should hold its shape and print for years. We have pieces from our early runs that people are still wearing and that still look good.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an oversized t-shirt?
An oversized t-shirt has a looser, roomier fit than a standard tee, with a dropped shoulder seam, wider body and longer hem. The fit is intentionally relaxed rather than fitted, and works across a wide range of body shapes. You can read more about how our oversized fit is designed on our oversized t-shirts Australia page.
How do you size an oversized t-shirt?
For a genuinely oversized look, size up one from your usual. For a relaxed but less dramatic result, stay in your normal size. Our oversized fit has the drop built into the pattern, so even in your usual size it sits roomier than a standard tee. Check the detailed sizing page for exact measurements and fit photos.
Are oversized t-shirts good for all body types?
Yes. The looser silhouette works across a wide range of body shapes because it is not designed to follow the body closely. We offer oversized tees from XS to 5XL with nothing categorised by gender.
What GSM is good for an oversized t-shirt?
180 to 200 GSM is a good range for an everyday oversized tee. Enough weight to drape properly and hold shape without being heavy. Our tees are 180 GSM combed cotton.
Where can I buy oversized t-shirts in Australia?
Our oversized tees collection has everything from Australian humour and memes to pop culture and Australiana, all printed to order in Sydney. Free shipping on Australian orders over $85.
How do you wash an oversized t-shirt without ruining it?
Wash cold, inside out, gentle cycle. Air dry or low heat dryer. No iron on the print. High heat is the main cause of both print deterioration and fabric shrinkage, so avoiding it is the one thing that matters most.
