What does tnetennba mean?
Tnetennba means nothing. It is a made-up word invented by Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd, and the fact that it has no definition is the entire joke. If you came here hoping for a secret meaning, there genuinely is not one. Moss invented it on the spot, a game show host accepted it without blinking, and the internet has been searching for a definition ever since.
That is the short answer. The longer answer involves Countdown, a teapot, and one of the best cold opens in British comedy.
The scene it comes from
Tnetennba appears in The Final Countdown, the second episode of series four of The IT Crowd, which first aired on Channel 4 in July 2010. Moss, played by Richard Ayoade, goes on the long-running letters and numbers show Countdown and spots an eight letter word in the jumble that nobody else can see.
When the host asks him to use it in a sentence, Moss replies, with total confidence, "Good morning, that's a nice tnetennba." Nobody questions it. Moss wins the round, goes on a record-breaking streak, and earns his Countdown Teapot.
The episode then follows Moss into the secret world of elite Countdown champions, including the 8+ Club, a velvet-roped VIP lounge for contestants who have survived eight rounds, and the underground sport of Street Countdown. If you have not seen it, it is 24 minutes very well spent.
So why do so many people search for it?
Because the word is so convincingly word-shaped. It looks like it should mean something. It has the texture of a real obscure noun, which is exactly why the gag lands, and exactly why thousands of people a month type it into Google expecting a dictionary entry.
Over the years the internet has tried to backfill a definition. The most popular joke entry defines tnetennba as a word that exists purely to attract traffic to a website. We would like to formally acknowledge that this blog post is, in that sense, the most tnetennba thing we have ever published.
Yes, we made the shirt
We are an independent label in Sydney and we print to order, which means we get to make shirts for jokes with an audience of dozens rather than millions. The Tnetennba Tee is one of those. It is the word, on a shirt, and that is it. The people who know will know immediately. Everyone else will assume it is a Scandinavian furniture brand, which is its own kind of fun.
Like everything we make, it is printed in our Artarmon studio on an ethically made AS Colour blank when you order it. Wear it to a pub trivia night and wait.
More from the same corner of the internet
If The IT Crowd is your sort of thing, you will probably find a few other shirts you recognise in our pop culture collection, alongside The Mighty Boosh range and the broader chaos of our funny t-shirts collection. No tnetennbas were harmed in the making of any of them.
