What does tnetennba mean?
Tnetennba means nothing. It is a made up word invented by Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd, and the fact that it has no definition is the entire joke. Well, that and the amazing Countdown parody. He's all out of milk. Anyhow, if you came here hoping for a secret meaning, there genuinely is not one. Sorry. Figured I should put that out there sooner rather than later. Moss invented it on the spot, a game show host accepted it without blinking, and the internet has been searching for a definition ever since. How iconic.
That is the short answer. The longer answer involves Countdown, a teapot, and one of the best cold opens in British comedy. I think anyway, and I'm an Australian drungo who can barely string a sentence together. So my opinion matters*

What episode of The IT Crowd is tnetennba from?
Tnetennba appears in The Final Countdown, the second episode of series four of The IT Crowd, which first aired on Channel 4 in July 2010. Now you know. Moss, played by the great Richard Ayoade, goes on the long running letters and numbers show Countdown and spots a nine letter word in the jumble that nobody else can see. He does it very fast too, then just chills out while waiting, which makes it all the more engaging.
When the host asks him to use it in a sentence, Moss replies, with total confidence, "Good morning, that's a nice tnetennba." Nobody questions it. Moss wins the round, goes on a record breaking streak, and earns his Countdown Teapot.
Is tnetennba a real word?
No. Tnetennba is not a real word, has no definition, and did not exist before Moss said it out loud. That is what makes the scene work. He declares it under time pressure, uses it in a sentence with total confidence, and everybody just accepts it. Say anything certainly enough and people will nod along, which is the whole lesson of the bit, and arguably of most meetings.
Is tnetennba in the Oxford English Dictionary?
It is not in the Oxford English Dictionary, and it is not in Collins or Merriam-Webster either, because dictionaries remain stubborn about words needing to mean something. Given how many people look it up every month, it might be the only word famous specifically for not existing. If the OED ever caves and adds it, the joke will have officially beaten the dictionary, and we will print a commemorative shirt.
Is tnetennba an anagram of something?
People keep checking whether the letters hide a secret. They do not. The best you can do with the nine letters is Bennett with an A and an N left over, or Annette with a B and an N going spare, neither of which is a hidden message. It is nine letters of pure nothing, arranged confidently. Exactly as Moss intended.
What is Street Countdown?
The same episode follows Moss into the secret world of elite Countdown champions, including the 8+ Club, a velvet roped lounge for anyone who has managed an eight or better on the show, and the underground sport of Street Countdown, which is exactly what it sounds like: the letters game, played in the shadows, treated with the gravity of an illegal street race. If you have not seen it, it is 24 minutes very well spent.
So why do so many people search for it?
Because the word is so convincingly word shaped. It looks like it should mean something. It has the texture of a real obscure noun, which is exactly why the gag lands, and exactly why thousands of people a month type it into Google expecting a dictionary entry.
Over the years the internet has tried to backfill a definition. The most popular joke entry defines tnetennba as a word that exists purely to attract traffic to a website. We would like to formally acknowledge that this blog post is, in that sense, the most tnetennba thing we have ever published. The shirt above is a close second.
