Hey friend,
So today is R U OK? Day. It can feel a bit strange (cos it is) putting so much focus on one particular day when we should really be looking out for each other all year round. Your wellbeing matters to us every day, not just today.
At LKC, mental health has always been a big part of our story. Nobody here really fits the generic definition of “typical” (yay for neurodiversity), and we have always been pretty open about the fact that life is not easy all the time. Or any of the time. Some days are fine, some are shit, and sometimes you have no idea what is going on. We try to support each other as best we can, and we want you to know you are part of that too, and always will be.
Claire has also made a new One Day A Year Tee for us that sums up this feeling pretty well. It is funny, but mostly because far too many workplaces stick up one poster about mental health today and then forget about it again tomorrow. It’s clear they don’t actually give a shit. Maybe they’ll do a pizza party tho.
If you feel like being around people who understand without having to explain much, you are always welcome in our Lonely Kids Club Club Facebook group. It is a genuinely lovely group of really cool people. You do not need to introduce yourself or post anything. You can just lurk. Sometimes even that can help.
People say “look after yourself” as though it is easy, but a lot of the time it really is not. We cannot always control how we feel. Sometimes the best we can do is try to find small things that make it a little easier. Nothing good or bad ever stays the same. For me, as I’ve gotten older I’ve naturally become less fussed about missing out on things and don’t have anywhere near as much FOMO as I used to. I’ve also been really enjoying posting more positive affirmations in the LKCC group which I’m grateful for, as it helps me feel better too. Even dinosaurs can make the flowers bloom.
Whatever is going on in your life, you are not the only person who has felt that way. Talk to someone if you can. You do not need to wait for someone else to ask first, and you definitely do not need to wait for R U OK? Day.
Love,
Warwick & The LKC Team
P.S. We do have a Mental Health Positive range if you feel like looking at some tees. If you do not, no worries. Go and do something else that makes you happy. Maybe eat some sushi.
P.P.S. if you don’t know who else to talk to, don’t forget you can always ring the good people at Lifeline at 13 11 14 (or text to 0477 13 11 14 if a chat is a bit too much right now)
