The Best Gender-Neutral Clothing in Australia (And How to Spot the Fakes)

"Gender-neutral" is one of the most abused labels in Australian fashion. Half the time it means a men's shirt with new product photography; the other half it means beige. We've made gender-neutral clothing since 2011 (every design we print is unisex by default, not a special range), so here's an honest guide to finding clothes that are actually built for every body, and how to spot the ones that aren't.

What genuinely gender-neutral clothing looks like

Real gender-neutral design shows up in the boring details, not the marketing. Look for these five things before you buy:

1. One sizing chart with actual measurements. If a "unisex" garment only lists S to XL with no chest measurements in centimetres, that's a men's blank with the label swapped. A real range runs wide, because bodies do. Ours goes XS to 5XL on most pieces.

2. Photos on different bodies. One sample size on one model tells you nothing. We keep unedited photos of every cut on real, different people on our tee fits page for exactly this reason.

3. Cuts that don't assume a body. Boxy, dropped-shoulder and regular straight cuts work across bodies; darted, tapered "his and hers" versions of the same design are gendered clothing wearing a costume.

4. Design that isn't coded. If the "neutral" range is entirely grey marle, that's not neutrality, that's surrender. Prints, colour and actual personality shouldn't be gendered.

5. A returns window that lets you experiment. Finding your fit outside the gendered system sometimes takes two goes. We run 100-day easy returns so a wrong guess costs nothing but patience.

The best gender-neutral pieces to start with

Oversized graphic tees. The great equaliser. A boxy, heavyweight oversized tee reads the same on every body and does the styling work for you. It's the single safest gender-neutral purchase there is.

Regular-fit graphic tees. Our graphic tees are printed to order in Sydney on ethically sourced unisex blanks, in designs from silly to political. One cut, one chart, everyone invited.

Hoodies and jumpers. Fleece has never cared about gender. A graphic hoodie in your actual preferred amount of oversized is the winter version of the boxy tee.

Pride and identity designs. Our pride and LGBTQIA+ collection is gender-neutral by design: original artwork, not rainbow-washed leftovers, with part of the catalogue supporting charity.

Accessories. Totes, caps and socks are the zero-risk entry point: no sizing, no cut, all personality.

Sizing without the gender maths

Ignore the letter on the tag and use the measurements: grab a tee you already like, lay it flat, measure the chest, and match it to the chart. Between sizes on a graphic tee? Size up: oversized is a choice, tight is a sentence. And if it lands wrong, that's what the 100-day returns are for.

Why print-to-order suits gender-neutral clothing

Traditional retail bakes gender into inventory: someone guesses how many "men's" and "women's" units to stock, then discounts the leftovers into landfill. Because every Lonely Kids Club piece is printed when you order it in our Sydney studio, nothing is stocked by gender at all. Your size, your cut, your design, made for you specifically. That's what unisex by default actually means in practice.
